Nida – the greatest resort town in Lithuania

Nida is a small resort town in Lithuania, hosting about 300000 tourists each summer (mostly Lithuanians, Russians, Latvians and especially Germans). Nida is the biggest town in the Curonian Spit. There are many accommodation possibilities and tourists have big alternatives where to stay – you can choose hotel, guest house, camping site, flat or a room for rent.

Vacationers had discovered Nida as a resort site in the second half of the 19th century. There were built many new hotels, guesthouses and restourants. All Nida hotels and guesthouses are high-quality and the staff is very pleasant.

Continuously threatened by sand drifts, the village was moved away from the dune to today’s position in the 1730s. In the beginning of 20th century, Nida became famous as a colony of German expressionists. Artists such as Max Pechstein, Alfred Lichtwark, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Alfred Partikel visited Nida. Painters from Koenigsberg such as Julius Freymuth and Eduard Bischoff  stayed in the area, as did poets like Ernst Wiechert and Carl Zuckmayer. Other guests included Ernst Kirchner, Ernst Mollenhauer, Franz Domscheit and Herrmann Wirth. The painters usually took accommodations at the Herman Blode hotel, and left some of their works with him.

Today Nida is one of the most popular resort town in Lithuania. Here are a lot of interesting places to visit, including highest sand dunes in Europe. The most visited place is Parnidzio dune, which is 52 m height. There is a great viewpoint and also the only place in Lithuania where people can observe sun rise and the sunset into waters in the same place. Here you can also visit fisherman’s ethnographic museum, beautiful neo-gothic Church and, of course, gallery of amber.

Amazing landscape, calm atmosphere, a lot of impressions here are just few things, which you can feel in Nida, so if you come to Lithuania, you must also visit Curonian Spit.
